If Paige Parker, a long-time cherished patron of the SSO, penned down her reasons to support the arts, topping the list would be her steadfast belief in its power to uplift spirits, stimulate minds, and foster connections that transcend borders and languages. “(The arts) are the lifeblood of a vibrant and compassionate society,” she added.
Paige’s advocacy for the arts is paired with swift action, evident in her ties with various arts organisations, including the Singapore Ballet and the Asian Civilisations Museum. Her philanthropic work remains one of her many enduring endeavours since settling into Singapore with her husband Jim Rogers in 2007. The multi-hyphenate is also a graduate gemmologist, an author, and a host of her podcast show, Pass the Power with Paige Parker.
“When the SSO performed Rachmaninoff over two weekends (January 2024),” she shared enthusiastically of one of her memorable SSO concert experiences, “the splendid music, along with countless people in the sold-out Esplanade Concert Hall, gave me immense hope.”
Harnessing her boundless love for classical music, Paige has played an active role in the SSO Ladies’ League since 2014 , working on various editions of the annual benefit dinner. From 2024 onwards, an organising committee specific to the benefit dinner has been set up, with Paige taking the helm as Chair.
To be held on 11 May 2024 at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenium Singapore, the first iteration of the SSO Symphony Ball, themed Joie de Vivre, is set to be a night of gastronomic experiences, grand symphonic music and great conviviality. It will feature Music Director Hans Graf for the very first time, leading the SSO and two young Singaporean soloists, mezzo-soprano Jade Tan and saxophonist Samuel Phua, in an all-French music programme.
Bravissimo chatted with Paige to find out what motivates her arts advocacy and more about the much-anticipated fundraising event.
Share your personal connection with the arts.
The arts have been my lifelong companion, guiding me through moments of wonder and reflection. As a child, my passion for ballet introduced me to classical music. However, growing up in a small town, there was no orchestra to be found! From those graceful ballet movements in my childhood to the enchanting melodies of the New York Philharmonic during my early adult years in the Big Apple, my journey with the arts has been nothing short of magical. When my husband and I moved to Singapore, our shared love for classical music and dance led us to support the SSO and Singapore Ballet. Beyond attending performances, it is about immersing ourselves in the beauty and richness of human expression that the arts offer.
What drives your longstanding support for the SSO?
My support for the SSO is fuelled by a deep belief in its mission to enrich lives through music. In a world that can often feel chaotic and fragmented, the SSO offers a sanctuary of beauty and harmony, reminding us of our shared humanity and the transformative power of music.
How has the experience been so far as the Chair of Symphony Ball Committee?
Leading the revitalised SSO Symphony Ball has been both a privilege and a challenge. With the support of a dedicated committee and strong development team, we are striving to create an evening that not only raises needed funds, but also celebrates the joy and beauty of music. It is a labour of love, fuelled by a shared passion to create a magical evening for our supporters and friends.
How has the creative synergy been teaming up with Maestro for the Ball?
Teaming up with Maestro Hans Graf for this gala has been an incredible honour. His passion for music is contagious, and his commitment to excellence is truly inspiring. He has planned the entire program, featuring all French composers. He has also given his input on the menu and wines. Together, we are working to create an unforgettable evening that showcases the talent and artistry of the SSO, while celebrating the profound impact of music.
What can guests look forward to at the Ball, and what sentiment do you hope they can leave with?
From the sumptuous French cuisine to the live auction featuring fine French wines, the night promises to be a feast for the senses. Additionally, guests can look forward to indulging in a selection of premium whiskeys and cognac at the dedicated bar in the foyer.
I hope each guest will depart with a heart full of joy and gratitude, knowing their support has made a meaningful difference for our national orchestra. It shall be an occasion to remember, a celebration of the human spirit, and the enduring power of music to unite us all.
