Behind every SSO concert is a group of unsung heroes backstage.
Meet Asyiq Iqmal, Assistant Stage Manager of the Singapore Symphony Group. As part of a lively crew behind the scenes, Asyiq plays an essential role to ensure every production proceeds without a hitch, all while remaining unseen to audiences as they enjoy SSO’s world-class performances.
Interestingly, the affable stage manager started out as a theatre actor at 15 years old, and only developed a penchant for stage management much later during his studies at The National Academy of Arts, Culture & Heritage Malaysia (ASWARA).
"In my foundation year, I began taking an interest in the backstage and technical setup of productions," Asyiq shared. "My lecturer saw my potential and encouraged me to further my studies in this area.”
Bravissimo spoke with Asyiq as he dished out surprising facts about his role, and the joys of working with the national orchestra.

Stage managers hold a pivotal position, acting as a conduit for the entire production, like glue that binds all elements together.
In my team, our work comes in three phases: pre-production, production and post-production. Prior to any production, we are involved in planning and preparing schedules in advance. This includes the stage layout, logistics and technical requirements. During the production week, we set up the stage, and run rehearsals before proceeding with the actual performance. We also ensure staging technicalities such as lighting, audio, and visuals are primed and ready. At the end of the concert and once the stage is cleared, we review ways to improve upcoming projects.
As a Stage Manager, I prioritise the seamless execution of all operations while upholding a consistent quality for every show. In addition, the team shoulders the responsibility of safeguarding the well-being of the musicians and crew members onsite. Lastly, we ensure all individuals, whether on stage or behind the scenes, possess a clear understanding of their roles so they are confident in delivering their best.
What are some challenges faced in your role?
Stage managers are at the heart of every live performance production, and we often find ourselves in high-pressure situations where tough decisions must be made, at times without a clear view of what might unfold next. These decisions can be influenced by factors including safety concerns, tight timeframes, and physical limitations, among others — all while juggling multiple stakeholders and requests.
In such moments, it is crucial to remain objective and refrain from taking things personally. As we navigate the different challenges, it is vital for stage managers to draw upon our values and past experiences, and exercise sound judgement as our guiding principles.
What are you most proud of in your work?
It is a privilege to be working with the SSO! Aside from meeting renowned conductors and artists, my greatest sense of accomplishment is when a concert runs smoothly and adheres to the exceptional standards the SSO is known for.
You have worked on numerous SSO productions! Share one experience that you found most memorable.
Each production brings its own unique and cherished moments. Among these, the time spent with my team holds a special place in my heart. We usually set up the stage in the early mornings and are the last to leave the venue. One memorable example was during the preparations for our outdoor community concerts at Gardens by the Bay in March and Singapore Botanic Gardens in May, where we braved the heavy rain on both occasions! Every second spent as one team is a treasured memory.
Why should people catch a live SSO concert?
Watching a live orchestral performance in a concert hall is one of the best experiences, and one that could be life-changing to some. You will be captivated by how musicians and their instruments harmoniously combine to form some of the most emotionally charged and powerful symphonies.
As Singapore’s flagship orchestra, the SSO serves as the heartbeat of the local cultural scene in its 44-week calendar of concerts and programmes every year. Memorable musical experiences created from these live performances are made possible by art administrators such as Asyiq. The applause that echoes through the concert halls is as much theirs as those you see onstage.
