31st Singapore International Piano Festival announces its lineup, SSO returns from tour for an exciting March

The Singapore International Piano Festival returns in June 2025 with Kate Liu, Kyoko Hashimoto, Paul Lewis and Robert Levin. Following a successful Australian tour in February, the Singapore Symphony also returns with a packed month of concerts featuring Quantedge Music Director Hans Graf, Associate Conductor Rodolfo Barráez, Kahchun Wong, Gerhard Oppitz and more.
Singapore, 21 February 2025 – The 31st edition of the Singapore International Piano Festival (SIPF), presented by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is set to return from 26 to 29 June 2025, with recitals, masterclasses and a lecture recital by four outstanding pianists. The SSO also continues its 2024/25 season, with concerts for everyone from music afficionados to casual listeners and families.
31st SINGAPORE INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL
“The Singapore International Piano Festival remains more vital and relevant than ever. Its inimitable varieties and synergies of artists and programming, as well as educational and inspirational value, make it an invaluable institution that will hopefully endure for a long time to come." - The Straits Times (2024)
Widely regarded as Asia’s premier piano festival, this year’s SIPF features four recitals, two masterclasses and one lecture recital by world-class pianists.
The festival opens with Singapore-born virtuoso Kate Liu (26 June), best known for winning the Bronze Medal, Best Mazurka Prize, and audience favourite prize at the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Competition. Witness the poetic fluidity of her artistry as she performs pieces by Mozart, Brahms and Chopin.
She is followed by multi-award-winning Japanese pianist Kyoko Hashimoto (27 June), who presents a fascinating programme traversing two centuries of mesmerising piano flair, including music by Messiaen, Scriabin, Debussy and more. She will also be conducting a masterclass the next day, on 28 June.
Third on the lineup is distinguished UK pianist Paul Lewis, who takes the stage for a recital (28 June) and masterclass (29 June). Pianophiles aware of Lewis’s famed interpretations of the Beethoven Piano Sonatas would be pleased to know that he will be performing Nos. 5 and 32, together with other music by Larcher and Brahms.
American pianist Robert Levin concludes the festival, with a recital (29 June) and a lecture recital (28 June) hosted by Lim Yan, SIPF’s Artistic Director. He showcases a unique all-Mozart programme – with a twist. The recital will offer a glimpse into how a late 18th century recital is programmed, with pieces connected from one to another through key changes. To up the game, Levin will invite the audience to submit themes during the concert, with which he will improvise upon.
HANS GRAF CONDUCTS THE SNYO FOR THE FIRST TIME
For the first time, SSO Quantedge Music Director Hans Graf will conduct the Singapore National Youth Orchestra in Hans Graf & SNYO (8 March). They present an attractive programme featuring Lyadov’s magical trio of tone poems – Baba Yaga, The Enchanted Lake and Kikimora, Gershwin’s beloved Broadway classic Porgy and Bess, and Sibelius’s magnificent Symphony No. 2.
KAHCHUN WONG RETURNS TO CONDUCT THE SSO
In conjunction with SG60, SSO returns to the Esplanade Concert Hall after seven months, with Kahchun Wong and Gerhard Oppitz – Brahms and Shostakovich (28 March). Trail-blazing Singaporean conductor Kahchun Wong, who is now the Principal Conductor/Artistic Advisor of the UK’s Hallé Orchestra and Chief Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic, directs the orchestra in Shostakovich’s monumental Fifth Symphony. They will be joined by German pianist Gerhard Oppitz for Brahms’s popular Piano Concerto No. 2.
On 4 and 5 April, the orchestra continues to play under his baton for Akiko Suwanai and Kahchun Wong - Dvořák and Elgar at the Victoria Concert Hall. Prominent Japanese violinist Akiko Suwanai will perform Dvořák’s folk-inspired Violin Concerto, and the SSO rounds up the evening with Elgar’s celebrated Enigma Variations.
FREE CONCERTS FOR THE FAMILY
The SSO season has plenty of offerings audiences can choose from if they are looking to attend more accessible concerts. SSO Lunchtime Concert 2025 (12 March), SSO In Your Community 2025 (14 March) and Temasek Foundation × SSO: Music in the Meadow (15 March) are a series of free concerts conducted by Associate Conductor Rodolfo Barráez. Join us for easy-listening classical music at the Victoria Concert Hall, Eunoia Junior College and Gardens by the Bay respectively.
CONCERTS FOR CHILDREN
The popular SSO Concerts for Children series also returns with Temasek Foundation × SSO: Peter, the Wolf and Friends on 22 and 23 March. Storytellers of Really Inventive Stuff will be accompanied by the orchestra and Associate Conductor Rodolfo Barráez, for Leopold Mozart’s Toy Symphony, Aesop’s timeless The Tortoise and the Hare, as well as Prokofiev’s well-known Peter and the Wolf. This is the perfect introduction to classical music, and a suitable activity for children during the March holidays.
FOR CHAMBER AND ORGAN MUSIC LOVERS
The viola takes the limelight in SSO Chamber Series: The Viola, Centrestage (7 March). Join Diyang Mei, Principal Viola of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and musicians of the SSO in three pieces of music shining the spotlight on the viola. From Baroque to Romantic, they perform Telemann’s Viola Concerto in G major, Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata and Weber’s Andante e Rondo Ongarese.
Witnessing the power of the pipe organ live is an extraordinary experience, especially under the skillful hands (and feet) of Adam Brakel, who was hailed as “one of the most talented organists in the world” by the Chicago Tribune. SSO Organ Series: Adam Brakel’s Night on a Bald Mountain (29 March) showcases a wide variety of pieces from Mussorgsky’s A Night on Bald Mountain to Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in E minor and Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag.
BE A SINGAPORE SYMPHONY CHORISTER FOR A DAY
Aspiring singers can participate in the joy of symphonic choral music with the Singapore Symphony Chorus (SSC) and Youth Choir (SSYC) at The Choral Encounter (30 March). Led by Choral Director Eudenice Palaruan and Assistant Choral Conductor Ellissa Sayampanathan, this is an exciting opportunity to connect with like-minded and experienced choristers through a full day of workshops, rehearsals and performing.
