LAN SHUI'S FAREWELL
In his final concerts as our Music Director, Lan Shui directs his swansong in the form of Mahler’s monumental Resurrection Symphony, a work close to his heart. Lan Shui has been Music Director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra since 1997. Through his contributions, he has “turned a good regional orchestra into a world-class ensemble that plays its heart out at every concert” (American Record Guide), brought the SSO on several acclaimed tours to Europe, Asia and the US, as well as recorded over 20 albums for the premier Swedish classical record label BIS.
Mahler’s Second Symphony, famously known as the Resurrection Symphony, is a massive 90-minute work involving an augmented orchestra, with the addition of two solo vocalists and a choir. It is an apocalyptic musical monument on the purpose and sufferings in life, death and life beyond death. The SSO is joined by Swedish singers Miah Persson (soprano) and Anna Larsson (mezzo-soprano), both renowned for their Mahler performances, as well as the combined choral forces of the Singapore Symphony Chorus and Youth Choir, the Hallelujah Chorus, The Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Canticorum, the Singapore Bible College Community Choir.
A post-concert autograph session with Lan Shui will be held after the performance on Friday, 25 Jan.
