TOP SINGAPORE AND MALAYSIA YOUTH MUSICIANS TO PERFORM IN SPECIAL ORCHESTRAL CELEBRATION
This December, two of the finest youth orchestras from Singapore and Malaysia will perform in a two-night special at the 1,600-seat Esplanade Concert Hall.
On December 12, the Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO) will rouse audiences with a trans-Atlantic repertoire, from Gershwin to Copland to Vaughan Williams, and feature 20-year-old Singaporean clarinet soloist Samuel Chan.
Singapore’s leading youth orchestra will play under the baton of world-renown conductor Peter Stark in his first Singapore appearance. A widely respected mentor and director of youth orchestras, Stark is Professor of Conducting at London’s Royal College of Music and Rehearsal Director of the European Union Youth Orchestra, among others.
The following evening, on December 13, the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) will perform in the Singapore conducting debut of Malaysian pianist-composer Tengku Irfan. The celebrated 19-year-old prodigy, who first made his piano debut at the age of 11, will present his new composition What Does It Take to Dance?
The MPYO will also accompany 13-year-old violinist Low Zi Yang in Ravel’s Tzigane, conducted by Naohisa Furusawa, Resident Conductor of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and conclude with Dvořák’s popular “New World Symphony”.
Both MPYO and SNYO are considered “best-in-class” for youth orchestra musicians in Malaysia and Singapore, respectively. The two orchestras have had regular exchanges with concerts tours and orchestra camps.
The SNYO is managed by the Singapore Symphony Group, which manages the flagship Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and choral groups of varying ages.
