Beethoven and the Cult of Genius
The name of Ludwig van Beethoven is synonymous with musical genius. But why is this so? What keeps this composer at the top of the classical canon? Is there something inherent in Beethoven’s music, or is it a culmination of myths and legends surrounding the composer himself? Come explore the tales and truths that have contributed to our perception of this musical master, and to our understanding of ‘genius’.

Ibert Flute Concerto • Shostakovich 5

Speaker: Lionel Choi
Former music critic with The Straits Times and Artistic Director of the Singapore International Piano Festival

In the 1930s, the Soviet Union reeled under the purges of Joseph Stalin. After his opera "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" was condemned in the state newspaper Pravda, Shostakovich hid his Fourth Symphony away in a bottom drawer and composed a Fifth which – on the surface at least – would better please Stalin and the authorities. Its première was acclaimed with a half-hour ovation. Job done. But was that finale really a triumphant victory? Or was it a cryptic message of defiance? Lionel Choi discusses the work and its place in the troubled legacy of Shostakovich.
