Synopsis

The now classic 1998 film The Red Violin traces the life of a magnificent, haunted violin in a tale spanning over 300 years. Our storyteller in this concert is the much-lauded Russian-American violinist Philippe Quint, “a fiddle virtuoso whose many awards are fully justified by the brilliance of his playing.” (Chicago Tribune). Completing the programme, the SSO’s Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Litton contrasts Bernstein’s vibrant Candide Overture to the brooding strains and defiant turmoil of Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony.
